About Us
Salisbury Sinfonia was established in 1992 by its founding conductor Michael Moorsom and a group of local players. It has given regular concerts in and around Salisbury ever since. In our programming we aim to present interesting and varied concerts, and to provide opportunities for local soloists — especially young players and singers. The orchestra's core repertoire is that of the classical period, particularly Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but its concerts have included a wide range of works, from Baroque to the 21st century. In addition, we have enjoyed a successful series of collaborations with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir, and have accepted repeat invitations to take part in Ringwood Festival. We celebrated our tenth anniversary in July 2002, when the orchestra gave the first performance of A Wiltshire Elegy by David Lyon, commissioned for the occasion by Ben Kerwood. The orchestra now thrives under the baton of the young London-based conductor Tim Murray.
Salisbury Sinfonia Concert Society was formed in 1996 as a non-profit making body whose purpose is to support the organisation of the orchestra, and recently became a registered charity. It is a member of Making Music(formerly the National Federation of Music Societies).
